Exploring Design, Innovation, and Education: Our Journey with Cannon Design

During the DB4E Summer Academy, we partner with Cannon Design, led by Cindy Bambini, Vice President and Business Development Leader at Cannon Design—a true connector in the world of design, innovation, and education. Our enriching experience spanned the latter half of Week 3 and the entirety of Week 4 at the DB4E Summer Academy, taking us on a captivating exploration of architecture, engineering, entrepreneurship, and their profound impact on our communities.

Week 3: A Dive into Architectural Marvels

Our adventure commenced with a remarkable "kick-off" as Cindy Bambini took us on an exclusive tour of CityPark, home of St. Louis City SC. Here, we delved deep into the intricacies of the design process, uncovering the reasoning behind different aspects of the soccer stadium, including the steep seating arrangements.

We met award-winning landscape architect Chip Crawford, who shared the stories and reasoning behind the exterior design, commemorating the history of the land and the former black residents with meticulous details. We also received a captivating explanation of Damon Davis' Pillars of the Valley monument, paying homage to the former neighborhood. It was an enlightening experience that connected us with our area's rich history.

Week 3 was further enriched by a panel from CREW STL, experts in Commercial Real Estate. These professionals, representing every facet of the industry, generously shared their knowledge and insights, expanding our understanding of this dynamic field. Their wisdom was a guiding light as we navigated the multifaceted world of Commercial Real Estate.

An equally exciting part of this week was joining Chauncey Nelson, President and CEO of the Gateway South Innovation District, on a visionary tour of a forthcoming landmark in St. Louis. This glimpse into the future was both exhilarating and thought-provoking, prompting us to dream about our potential impact on the city's landscape.

Week 4: Design, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship

Week 4 was a natural extension of our exploration from Week 3. It was a week filled with immersive experiences that broadened our understanding of design, engineering, and entrepreneurship.

Our education in Civil Engineering and project site development began with insights from David Mason & Associates. Ehrin Sleet and Michael Mueller, P.E., illuminated the intricacies of the CITYPARK project's site plan and structural design, establishing the foundation for the stadium. This insight underscored the vital role of engineering in translating architectural visions into reality.

A visit to the Botanical Garden provided another dimension to our education. Andrew Wyatt, the horticultural lead, shared the art of selecting plants for a site, while Alisa Blatter from Arbolope, a minority- and woman-owned landscape architecture firm, introduced us to the intricacies of site design. We learned about water flow, plant viability, walking paths, and more, emphasizing the integration of public water and sewer systems.

Week 4 also introduced us to inspiring women entrepreneurs from St. Louis, including Cheryl Stoddard of T.I.E. Engineering, Lisa J. Reed of RBLD Lighting Design, and Patty Gaus of Gaus Acoustics. Together, we explored crucial aspects of facility safety, technological accessibility, visual aesthetics, and acoustic considerations. Their stories were powerful examples of how creativity, entrepreneurship, and design intersect to create meaningful spaces.

The highlight of Week 4 was undoubtedly the opportunity for our students to partner with the Cannon Design team. They put their newfound knowledge to the test by undertaking an exciting project: designing our new headquarters space within an old bank building. Through close collaboration, they envisioned how building systems could serve the purpose of the space while ensuring safety. Their innovative designs included cafes, study rooms, basketball courts, games rooms, and more, all strongly emphasizing integrating the community into our headquarters.

To top our time with Cannon Design, their intern built a model of our new space, leaving us filled with gratitude. We extend our thanks to Cindy, the Cannon Design team, and all the contributors who enriched our students' learning journey. Together, we continue to build a brighter future!
